Reverse-engineering subsea interfaces in decommissioning.
One of the most significant markets for us here at Savante involves reverse-engineering the interfaces found on aged subsea-assets. With the North Sea oil province now over 40 years old and with many fields preparing for decommissioning many of our clients are discovering that the quality of archived engineering diagrams are not of sufficiently high enough quality to enable accurate determination of interfaces or identification of specific intervention tools. This is creating a problem in planning future decommissioning operations.
In the decommissioning of wellheads in particular, planning to accommodate a wider variety of contingency interfaces and adopting a "trial and error" approach can add significant and unnecessary cost in tooling and MODU hire time. Critically the use of incorrect tooling can increase the risk of damaging the asset; particularly risky if deployed onto threaded assemblies which may incorporate elements of a safety barrier design philosophy.

In point of fact, over 40% of well and subsea engineering diagrams we received in 2015 and 2016 in advance of project kickoff meetings are completely illegible; vital dimensions and text apparently "redacted" or in many cases, where pages which have accidentally folded whilst on the copier platen, have resulted in a complete loss of data. In a further 25% of projects, we've discovered from the as-found condition of assets taken from recent ROV video inspections incorporates features which do not even appear in those original engineering diagrams.
